When we sent out the call for photo submissions, we didn't expect as great of a response as we have seen. We'd like to take the time to highlight that we love seeing all your submissions. Feel free to tag us regularly in volunteering photos regardless of whether you are an individual volunteer. We'd love to continue seeing your volunteering and traveling adventures.
Matthew, a WWH volunteer recently went to help out in Nepal due to the recent earthquakes. Many parts of the affected areas are still in need of volunteers to help with construction and distributing supplies. He emailed us various photos, but he also told us a little bit about his experience in Nepal.
"My two main areas of volunteer activity revolved around the area of Khokana, Nepal. The first week of volunteering was at a local orphanage. Eight beautiful children, all of whom were so greatly impacted by the earthquake, lived in a housing area made of tin sheets placed in a half circle and secured by bamboo and iron rods. As if the earthquake devastation was not enough, they had frequent scares of leopards that caused havoc throughout the area. Most people living in the village found shelter in their partially destroyed houses. However, living in a shelter so open to the world, these children were at great risk. Along with 15 other volunteers, we built a barbed wire fence around the entire plot of land that these children called home. The entire project took about one week and I must say it looked fantastic. For all the blood, sweat and countless hours it took to finish, the look on the children’s faces was one that I will never forget. With the financial support I received from other areas, I along with other volunteers were able to use a portion of the donations to fully furnish their living quarters. Pots, pans, plates, cups, and everything that the children needed were donated through your support. . . Words cannot begin to describe the lessons learned and the friendships gained through this experience. So many selfless people from all corners of the world pitched in to lend a helping hand. It’s pretty amazing what a little hard work and positive attitude can do for a country that has experienced such an overwhelming disaster."
We post volunteering photos so that any of you who are on the fence about going abroad to volunteer will be inspired by stories and images like Matthew's. If everyone helped out abroad or locally for just a few days, a lot good can be done.
