Questions about volunteering?

Brand new to volunteering, i've been interested in doing something like this for a couple years. 20 year old female from the United States, I've worked with kids in the past (gymnastics coach) and I absolutely love it. Hoping to work/teach or even just hangout with kids who don't have that interaction everyday. I have found a project in Peru that i'm looking into, I'd love to help make a difference there for atleast a month. I would like to know from those who have experience, what the ins and outs are. Volunteering everyday, now what do you do once volunteering is over for the day? What exactly are the living accomodations for these types of projects? How was your volunteer experience? Thank you very much and any little details would be so helpful.

Hi Kasidy,

Thank you for your questions and interest in volunteering. Since you already aware of your interest in children and what kind of work you want to do, i believe you are a step closer to realizing your dream of volunteering with children. You should make the next steps and browse through the projects available on this site in the country of your choice.

Once you make contact with a project like in this case the project in Peru. The contact person of the project is the best person to tell you what to expect. For example the type of accomodation and a little about the host family you will be staying with, if you will be volunteering with other volunteers, is the project far from the host family, what is the routine of current or past volunteers in the said project.

All projects are not the same and each one offers a different experience and those who have been in a particular project or are currently their are the best placed to have accurate information. Feel free to engage your contact person with questions or help with anything and i am sure they will be ready to help.

I wish you all the best in your volunteer experience!

All the best from Africa, Gibson

Hi kasidy!

Glad to hear that you are using the forum to do some due diligence. Hopefully you will get some good feedback.

Some insight from my experience.I worked at a school in a very rural village in Thailand. The housing was very basic, I was living a hut within the village. Once the day of teaching was over I was pretty much embraced within the village almost as a family member. I spent further playtime with the children, ate with the families and generally slept quite early.

If you want further information on the specific project in peru that you are looking at. I would suggest going to the project page and seeing if anyone else has been or is thinking of going. You may get some more information or even be able to read someon's blogs or see their albums.

You also try placing the name of the project or the organisation in the search box (top right) and everything listed about either the project or organisation will be listed.

I hope this helps.

thanks
roya
